WHY THESE STANDARDS MATTER
A useful answer starts with a careful question.
Clear writing should make the limits of an explanation easier to see, not hide them. The principles below describe the editorial aims for TBI Journal’s informational articles and commentary.
They are aims for how content should be prepared and presented, not a claim that this website operates an investigative newsroom or an independently audited review process.
OUR EDITORIAL AIMS
Clarity that can be questioned.
01
Explain the subject.
Our editorial aim is to use direct language and enough background for readers to follow the discussion. Technical terms should be explained when they are necessary.
02
Keep claims in proportion.
Articles should distinguish information from commentary and avoid presenting an interpretation as a settled conclusion. Strong wording does not make a claim stronger.
03
Make sources useful.
Where an article relies on a specific fact, statistic or external claim, it should identify an appropriate source. Readers should be able to understand where the information came from and whether it supports the statement.
04
Acknowledge uncertainty.
Information can change, sources can disagree and individual circumstances can affect how a general explanation applies. Those limits deserve to be stated.
COMMERCIAL TRANSPARENCY
Readers should know when a relationship matters.
Sponsored placements, paid links and affiliate relationships should be identified where they occur. Content should not be described as independent when a commercial arrangement affects it.
BEFORE PUBLICATION
Four questions worth asking.
QUESTION 01
Is it clear?
Would a reader unfamiliar with the topic understand the central point?
QUESTION 02
Is it supported?
Does the source support the specific statement being made?
QUESTION 03
Is it proportionate?
Does the wording reflect the strength and limits of the available information?
QUESTION 04
Is it transparent?
Are relevant uncertainties and commercial relationships made visible?
