Why Context Matters in Public Debate

A discussion becomes clearer when participants identify the question, timescale and assumptions they are using.

A discussion becomes clearer when participants identify the question, timescale and assumptions they are using.

Identify the frame

Ask what question the discussion is trying to answer. Two accounts can appear to conflict while addressing different aspects of an issue.

Pay attention to timescale

Distinguish a short-term observation from a long-term pattern. Notice whether the discussion uses a specific period or moves between periods without explanation.

Make assumptions visible

Write down what would need to be true for an argument to follow. An assumption deserves attention even when it sounds reasonable.

Describe disagreement carefully

Try to state another view in language its proponent would recognise. This is a useful test of whether you understand the point being debated.
