Recognising an article’s purpose helps you decide what questions to ask of it.
Look for the purpose
Ask whether the article aims to describe an event, explain its meaning or persuade you of a position. A single piece may combine these purposes.
Separate observation from interpretation
Notice the transition from a stated fact to a claim about its significance. The interpretation may be useful, but it is not the same as the observation.
Expect support for important claims
Whatever the format, factual claims should be examined on their merits. A label does not remove the need to check evidence.
Read with the format in mind
Consider what the article is trying to accomplish and what it leaves for other sources. This helps you choose an appropriate next step in your reading.
